Units equipped with internal combustion engines are completely autonomous in operation, and electric rail drills require a power source, usually a gasoline or diesel electric power unit AБ-4 or AД-4, manufactured by the TEXKOM engineering plant in St. Petersburg.

Rail boring machines differ in the way they are attached to the rail — for the sole — the bottom mount or for the head — the upper. By the method of feeding the drill - manual or automatic.

For drilling holes in rails, special drills are used with replaceable or soldered carbide polyhedral inserts, with a conical or cylindrical shank for fixing the cutting tool.
